The Sihang Warehouse Memorial of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression is a Shanghai-designated cultural heritage site. Covering a total floor area of approximately 3,800 square meters, the memorial spans three floors, all dedicated to exhibitions. It officially opened on Aug 13, 2015, marking the 78th anniversary of the outbreak of the Battle of Songhu, also known as the Battle of Shanghai.
The memorial honors the guiding principle of "respecting history and reflecting it truthfully". Set against the backdrop of the nationwide resistance under the banner of the anti-Japanese national united front, the memorial focuses on the heroic defense of the Sihang Warehouse. This historic event took place during the Battle of Shanghai in 1937, when over 420 soldiers from the 1st Battalion, 524th Regiment, 262nd Brigade, and 88th Division of the National Revolutionary Army’s 72nd Corps, led by Deputy Regimental Commander Xie Jinyuan (1905-41), held their ground for four days and nights starting on the night of Oct 26, bravely resisting Japanese forces. The memorial highlights the wartime deeds of Xie Jinyuan and the "Eight Hundred Heroes", celebrating the spirit of national salvation and passing on the legacy of patriotism to younger generations.
The Chinese film The Eight Hundred, directed by Guan Hu and released in 2020, revisits the history of 800 Chinese soldiers defending the warehouse under siege by Japanese forces.
