The 9.18 Historical Museum in Shenyang, Liaoning province is the only dedicated museum that comprehensively reflects the history of the September 18th Incident, also known as the Mukden Incident, which occurred on Sept 18, 1931. It was a staged event orchestrated by the Imperial Japanese army to create a pretext for Japan's invasion of Northeast China. It marked the beginning of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1931-45).
The new museum building was completed and opened to the public on Sept 18, 1999. It has been committed to promoting the history of the war of resistance against Japanese aggression and carrying forward the spirit of national resistance. It engages in various forms of patriotic and national defense education, places strong emphasis on academic research related to the September 18th Incident, and regularly launches themed exhibitions tied to major historical events and anniversaries.
Since its establishment, the 9.18 Historical Museum has collected more than 7,700 artifacts. Its collection primarily consists of historical documents and artifacts related to the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, Japan’s colonial rule, and the fierce struggles of the Chinese military and civilians in Northeast China.
The museum also houses important materials and relics from the former sites of the WWII Allied Prisoners-of-War Camp in Shenyang and the Special Military Tribunal for the Trial of Japanese War Criminals in Shenyang. The collection spans a wide range of topics, including military, political, economic and cultural aspects, and the postwar trials of Japanese war criminals, supporting the museum's exhibition and academic research needs.
